Liverpool and Newcastle United played out a 2–2 draw in the opening round of the 2026–2027 Premier League season, with Liverpool scoring a late equaliser at St James’ Park.
Newcastle took the lead twice during the match, but Liverpool continued to push until the final moments and eventually earned a penalty. Dominik Szoboszlai converted from the spot in the ninth minute of stoppage time to secure a point for Liverpool.
Newcastle Make a Strong Start
Newcastle began the match well in front of their home supporters and opened the scoring early.
In the fifth minute, Anthony Elanga finished a quick attack to put Newcastle ahead.
Liverpool tried to respond during the first half but were unable to find an equaliser, with Newcastle going into the break 1–0 ahead.
Gakpo Brings Liverpool Level
Liverpool came out stronger after the break and managed to equalise in the 55th minute.
Cody Gakpo scored Liverpool’s first goal of the match following an assist from Ryan Gravenberch, bringing the score to 1–1.
However, Liverpool’s equaliser did not last long.
Newcastle Regain the Lead
Just two minutes after Liverpool’s goal, Newcastle restored their advantage.
Joe Willock scored in the 57th minute to make it 2–1 to the home side.
Liverpool then increased the pressure as they looked for another equaliser, while Newcastle tried to protect their lead until the final whistle.
Szoboszlai Rescues Liverpool in the 90+9th Minute
Just as Newcastle appeared close to securing all three points, Liverpool were given a late opportunity to get back into the match.
The referee awarded Liverpool a penalty during stoppage time, with Dominik Szoboszlai stepping up to take it.
Szoboszlai converted the penalty in the 90+9th minute, making it 2–2 and giving Liverpool a valuable point.
The late goal prevented Liverpool from beginning the new Premier League season with a defeat.
Liverpool Begin the Season With a Point
Liverpool would have hoped to leave Newcastle with all three points, but the late equaliser at least gave them a point away from home.
The match comes at the beginning of a new phase for Liverpool, with changes to both the squad and coaching setup. It is therefore too early to make a full judgement after just one match.
Newcastle, meanwhile, will be disappointed not to secure the victory after leading twice and being ahead until the final moments.
A Match With Several Changes in Momentum
The game saw the lead change more than once.
Newcastle went ahead through Elanga before Gakpo brought Liverpool level. Willock then restored Newcastle’s lead, but Szoboszlai eventually rescued Liverpool with a stoppage-time penalty.
The match therefore ended Newcastle 2–2 Liverpool, with both teams taking one point from the opening round.
What Does the Draw Mean for Both Teams?
For Liverpool, earning a point away from home is better than leaving the match empty-handed, especially after falling behind twice.
Newcastle, however, will feel that they came close to making a perfect start in front of their home supporters.
Still, this is only the opening round, and it is too early to draw major conclusions about either team based on one match.
The Premier League clash between Newcastle United and Liverpool ended in a 2–2 draw, with four goals and several changes in momentum throughout the match.
Newcastle took the lead through Anthony Elanga before Cody Gakpo equalised for Liverpool. Joe Willock then put Newcastle back in front, but Dominik Szoboszlai converted a penalty in the 90+9th minute to give Liverpool a valuable point.
Both teams therefore begin the 2026–2027 Premier League season with one point, while the coming rounds will provide a clearer picture of their ability to compete throughout the season.
